Learn to Define Your Niche

One mistake new internet marketers make is to focus on big topics rather than trying to narrow their focus to a manageable size. For instance, if your interest was in rose gardening, and you tried to market for the keyword “gardening,” you would be competing with over 64 million other sites.

You need to be able to narrow your focus in order to be seen. If you narrowed your niche to “rose gardening” you have brought your competition down to 127,000. That is still a lot of competition, but you can start to see how having a more narrowly defined niche you can reduce the amount of competition.

On the surface it appears that you are shrinking your potential customer base. In reality, you are excluding a lot of people that are not really your customers. If you are selling rose gardening information, how much time and money do you want to waste attracting vegetable gardeners?

By having a smaller niche you are making sure that the people that are coming to your site are actually interested in what you are offering. The result is that more of your visitors will become customers. You see a much higher return on your investment, and increase your chances to earn money at home.

Earn Money at Home by Picking Your Niche

Before you just pick some keywords and start marketing you need to make sure that the words you chose are actually words that people are searching for. You can use services like Google AdWords Keyword Tool to help you make a choice.

This tool allows you to enter your keyword phrase into a search box, and it will tell you how many people searched for that term in the past month. You will be able to see whether or not your word is worth pursuing.

As a rule you want to focus on words that are getting more than 1,000 searches per month. If you rank well on Google for one of those terms, you will see a lot of traffic to your website. The more traffic, the more sales you will get.

Know Where Your Competition Is Not

Once you have a list of possible keywords, enter them into the Google search box. Make sure to surround your keyword phrase by quotation marks so you will only search for those specific words for instance, in the example above you would enter “rose gardening”.

The results you get will tell you the number of competing sites. You should focus on keyword phrases that have over 1,000 searches each month, and less than 30,000 competing websites. This will give you your best chance to earn money at home quickly.

There is money to be had online. Once you learn where it is at, and how to get it, you can apply that knowledge over and over again.
